With significant increase in bicycle traffic, cyclists need to be separated from other road users, both vehicles and pedestrians. Infrastructure that provides a full-service solution for cyclists must be safe for all road users.

Cyclist are a complex group, which in turn makes cycling projects a big challenge. Existing pathways, streets and roads cannot be used by all cyclists, and city space is often limited where new cycling facilities need to be constructed.
These challenges require a good understanding of bicycle traffic and knowledge of road safety, but road safety and sense of safety do not necessarily match. Solutions for bicycle traffic need to have an appropriate balance between safety, sense of safety and accessibility.
Cyclists face many challenges
Infrastructure for cycling to work, school and activities is often limited. Use of bicycles as means of transport is growing, and seen as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and today's growth in car traffic.
