The Seafood Conference 2023
The Seafood Conference 2023 will take place on November 2-3 in Harpa, Reykjavík. Helga J. Bjarnadóttir, Director of the Society Division at EFLA, will give a talk at the conference where she will discuss the climate impact of food production and the carbon footprint of different foods.
EFLA received the 'Strongest in Iceland' award 2023
Since 2010, Creditinfo has hosted the 'Strongest in Iceland' event to honor companies with strong foundation, stability in operation and resilience. This week the event took place at Harpa where EFLA received the prestigious award of being one of the 'Iceland's Strongest Companies' from Creditinfo for the 14th time.
A successful breakout session at the Arctic Circle
The Arctic Circle Assembly took place this weekend in Harpa, Reykjavík. There, EFLA hosted the breakout session "Shipping Toward the Green Future", exploring Iceland’s energy transition initiatives and sustainable port planning.

EFLA's biggest contract in Sweden to date
EFLA's activities in Sweden have grown significantly in recent years, and now the company has landed its biggest contract so far. The project concerns energy transmission, i.e. the design of a new 400 kV transmission line that is approximately 90 km long and connects the cities of Hallsberg and Timmersdal.

Study Trip to Iceland

EFLA involved in the electrification of a harbour
EFLA supervised a project in shore power connection systems for container vessels for Eimskip in Iceland, which was taken into use yesterday at Sundahöfn harbour in Reykjavik. The Norwegian company Blueday Technology AS was chosen to design and handle the construction of the equipment.

Top score quality secures EFLA a big contract with Statnett
EFLA Consulting Engineers recently won a contract for the engineering design of latest 90 km, 420 kV line in Blåfalli – Gismarvik, which will secure the power supply to Norway's second-largest aluminium smelter.

EFLA engineers attended this year’s CIGRE conference in Paris, which gathered approximately 3500 specialists from several countries to discuss and share the latest knowledge and technology on energy systems and components.
EFLA's involved in geothermal energy projects in Croatia
EFLA consulting engineers have been selected as partners in two projects related to the use of geothermal energy in Bjelovar, Croatia. The projects are partly funded by EEA and Norway Grants, EEA Grants. The goal of the projects is to increase energy production from renewable sources, reduce CO2 emissions and increase the security of energy supply.

EFLA receives the 2022 President of Iceland award
The president of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson awarded EFLA Consulting Engineers the 2022 presidential award for export achievement. EFLA's CEO, Sæmundur Sæmundsson, received the award at the award ceremony at Bessastaðir presidential residence, with a number of EFLA's employees in attendance.
EFLA acquires a majority stake in HECLA SAS
EFLA Consulting has acquired a majority stake in HECLA SAS, a French engineering company based in Paris, after the completion of EFLA ‘s acquisition of Landsvirkjun´s holdings, through its subsidiary Landsvirkjun Power, and Jean Chauveau. EFLA now holds a 96.5% share of HECLA SAS, with two key executives holding 3.5%.
A new geothermal spa in the north of Iceland
EFLA managed all the engineering design in the brand-new Forest Lagoon geothermal spa in the north of Iceland. EFLA conducted the project in close collaboration with Basalt Architects and the landscaping studio Landslag .

Carbfix has commissioned EFLA for a pre-design of Coda Terminal, Carbfix's CO2 mineral storage hub in Straumsvík, Iceland.

Visit from embassy representatives
The ambassador of Iceland in Norway and its business representative visited EFLA‘s office in Norway. The purpose of the visit was to gain insight into the operations and lay the groundwork for further strengthening of trade relations.
Underground cables that withstand lava flow
An interesting experiment is being carried out at the volcanic eruption sites in Fagradalsfjall to determine how much burden the underground cables can withstand from the lava flow. Hopefully, the findings will be informative for other similar and challenging situations.
Expansion at Keflavík Airport
Construction work has started for an additional 20.000 square meters at Leif Eiríksson Air Terminal at Keflavík Airport. EFLA Consulting Engineers has been part of the design management team and has taken on various engineering consultancy for the extension.
Framework agreement with Hamar municipality in Norway
EFLA has been confirmed as a party to a framework agreement worth 40 Million NOK, after competing with bids from all the largest engineering consulting firms in the Nordics.
Extensive framework agreement in Norway
EFLA is one of seven engineering consulting companies awarded an 880 million NOK framework agreement with the Norwegian Road Administration (Statens vegvesen), in competition with all the largest engineering consulting firms in Norway.

3-D model of the volcanic eruption in Iceland
EFLA‘s photogrammetry and drone specialists were recently on location at the volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland. The purpose of the trip was to fly a drone over the area and capture images that would then be turned into a 3-D model of the area.

EFLA is working on the development of Sweden's transmission
EFLA's transmission system projects in Sweden have made great progress. Svenska Kraftnät recently signed an agreement with EFLA for the development and design of new double-circuit 400 kV tower types that are a part of a development project for the next 20 years, called the NordSyd project.
EFLA receives an EPIC MegaGrant
EFLA Consulting Engineers has been granted an EPIC MegaGrant by Epic Games to complete its project „Time changes everything“. The project is a virtual time machine simulator. Epic Games is the maker of Fortnite, Unreal Engine and Twinmotion, to name a few.
EFLA highest rated in Statnett's framework agreement
Statnett, the system operator of the Norwegian transmission system, has renewed its framework agreement with EFLA Consulting Engineers. The framework agreement entails consultation as well as design work. EFLA received the highest score out of all participants.
Research & Development project of new tower type
Statnett powerlines (Norway) are generally constructed in extremely difficult, mountainous terrain exposed to high wind and ice loads. The lack of accessibility to most tower locations requires all equipment, materials and personnel to be flown to the construction site. Reducing the flying time or number of trips has a huge impact on the environment and cost. These constraints and impacts triggered a R&D project, with EFLA's participation, aimed at developing a new tower made completely of aluminium for the 420kV transmission network.

EFLA receives Prestigious Environmental Award
EFLA Consulting Engineers received a prestigious environmental award for exceptional work in environmental issues over the past year. The Icelandic Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources rewards each year this award, "Kuðungur" (Sea shell), recognising companies and public organisations who excel in environmental issues.

New small-scale Geothermal Power Plant
In the south part of Iceland, near Flúðir, a new power plant was commissioned in the beginning of 2019. The power plant is based on binary cycle, that has an organic working fluid in a Rankine cycle. EFLA was the main consultant in the project, with regards to geothermal and mechanical engineering.

Geothermal floating pools
Vök Baths, newest geothermal destination, and tourist attraction in the East part of Iceland have opened. The destination main landmarks are warm pools that float by the lake's shore. This beautiful area also includes an outdoor pool bar, a steam bath, and a restaurant. EFLA was responsible for all the engineering design of the facilities.
Award winning project – The Retreat at Blue Lagoon
In April 2018, The Blue Lagoon Iceland opened its impressive hotel and spa. The place has received noteworthy recognition and received numerous awards for architecture, design and service. EFLA has collaborated with The Blue Lagoon for a long time and was responsible for the engineering design at the hotel and spa.
Outstanding lighting design rewarded
The annual Lighting Design Awards, took place in London, Thursday 16th May. The talented team at KSLD | EFLA Lighting Design received two prestigious awards at the ceremony, for the lighting design at The Lava Tunnel, Raufarhólshellir, Iceland, and Natalie Redford, lighting designer, was honoured as one of the "40under40 Class of 2019".
Two winning sustainable building proposals
Winning proposals in the C40 international competition for sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings were announced last week. EFLA, together with its collaborators, had proposals for two plots in Reykjavík (Ártún and Lágmúli) that won in the competition.
Framework agreement in Norway
EFLA has signed a famework agreegment with the department of urban development in the Oslo city council. In collaboration with five other companies, EFLA will provide the council solutions that improves the urban environment in Oslo.
International symposium on mitigation measures
EFLA Consulting Engineers participated in a symposium on mitigation measures against snow avalanches and other rapid gravity mass flows. The conference took place in Siglufjörður, small community in North Iceland, from 3rd to 5th of April.
EFLA acquires an engineering consulting firm in Poland
EFLA Consulting Engineers has finalised the acquisition of the Polish firm Ispol Projekt. Ispol specialises in general preparation and design of energy transmission lines and substations. That includes overhead power lines, underground cables and fiber optic cables as well as high voltage equipment.
Life cycle assessment of the Icelandic transmission system
EFLA Consulting Engineers has performed a life cycle impact assessment of the Icelandic electrical transmission system. The assessment was carried out for Landsnet, the Icelandic transmission system operator, comprising the network's overhead lines, underground cables and substations. The system's carbon footprint is 0.9 g CO2-eq. per transmitted kWh, of which nearly half is attributed to transmission losses.
Masters project on heat recovery in an aluminium plant
EFLA engineer, Leó Blær Haraldsson, just completed his MSc degree in mechanical engineering. His thesis reports on an interesting project, which has attracted quite a bit of attention. The project examines the possibility of utilizing the thermal energy in exhaust gas from the Alcoa Fjarðaál aluminium plant to heat water for house heating in the nearby community of Reyðarfjörður.
