Project 2022
EFLA is a pioneer in introducing and implementing innovation based on an ecological approach. In all consulting and projects, EFLA's staff always strives to point customers and partners to environmentally friendly alternatives when it is technically and financially possible.
The following are some projects from last year related to social responsibility and the focus of the United Nations Global Goals.
NEW INFORMATION WEBSITE ON ENERGY EXCHANGE
In October, a new information website, orkuskipti.is opened. The website is designed to inform the public about energy exchange, energy consumption and their effects. They launched the website officially at a meeting while discussing the energy consumption in Iceland and the upcoming energy transition. In addition to EFLA, The industry association, Landsvirkjun and Samorka were involved in the project.
PRE-DESIGN OF THE NORSK SKOGFINSK MUSEUM
EFLA came to a preliminary design for a museum about the Norwegian forest finns, or Norsk Skogfinsk Museum, in Svullrya in the municipality of Grue in Norway, near the Swedish border. EFLA's staff handled electrical engineering design, building physics and geotechnical engineering.
A NEW APPROACH TO CREATING COST PLANNING
EFLA was involved in a project on a uniform methodology for preparing cost estimates. There needs to be more academic knowledge and standard work practices being used for planning in Iceland, especially in the civil engineering sector. In this country, the rules on cost estimates for public works are much more liberal than in most places abroad. Therefore, the new methodology will be helpful to implementers and all stakeholders in both the private and public sectors. In addition to EFLA, Samtok Iðnaðarinin, Félag prättáðirinjeneringa, Manvirki – félag tektaka and Samtok arkitekta-stofa have worked on the project, which was presented in October, with the support of SI's Progress Fund.
ELECTRIFICATION OF SUNDHÖFN HARBOR
EFLA's staff oversaw the shore connection of Eimskip's cargo ships to Sundahöfn, which was officially put into use in December. EFLA's role consisted of defining the project, designing, tendering and selecting equipment, and managing the construction contracts of the contractors involved. This project is a landmark project in the field of climate issues in Iceland, where work is being done to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and air pollutants from transport activities. Eimskip's largest ships can now be connected to electricity in Sundahöfn instead of running light engines that run on oil. Oil consumption will be reduced by up to 240 tons per year, equivalent to around 750 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
CONTRACT FOR PLANNING CONSULTANCY IN GARÐABÆ
EFLA and Arkþing – Nordic will jointly work on the preparation of the framework part of the master plan for development area A together with Hafnarfjörður road between the town limits of Garðabær, and an agreement to that effect was signed in April.
PRE-DESIGN OF AN OFFSHORE FUEL STATION IN VESTMANNAEYJAR
EFLA has concluded a contract with Icelandic Land Farmed Salmon (ILFS) for the preliminary design of a 10,000-ton land farm for salmon at Viðlagafjörður in the Vestmannaeys. The primary design includes i.a., three-dimensional drawing work of cookers, pipes, wiring, main structures and technical systems, and limited design implementations and alternative analyses. Work on the preliminary design has begun and is scheduled to be completed in December this year. It is planned that construction on the fire station can start in the summer of 2023.
A HEALTHY COMMUNITY IN A SPA
The first shovel to the health community at Lindarbrún in Hveragerði was taken at the beginning of May. EFLA and the architectural studio Arkþing Nordic won an idea competition for the area and will design a total of 84 sustainable certified apartments in the area. The apartments are divided into five clusters connected by heated walkways. There are charging stations for electric cars and bicycles and good walking and cycling routes. Particular emphasis will be placed on proximity to nature and a good footpath system connecting town paths.
ALDA – BRIDGE OVER FOSSVOGUR
The contract for the design of a new bridge over Fossvogr was signed at EFLA's headquarters in May. The design proposal was prepared by EFLA in collaboration with BEAM Architects and won the design competition of the Road Administration. The new bridge is intended for pedestrians and cyclists and is the key to the Borgarlínna's route over Fossvogr. The bridge closes a 5 km circle around Fossvogr and further increases the usefulness and attractiveness of the area. The bridge's design is flexible and fits well with the current layout in the area and the development that can be expected in the future. It responds to a call for an ambitious and noteworthy structure that falls into place the unique natural environment of Fossvogur.
THE FOREST LAGOON NEAR AKUREYRI
EFLA was responsible for the engineering design of the Forest Lagoon in Eyjafjörður County, near Akureyri, which were opened to the public in May. EFLA's partners were designers from Basalt Architects and Landslagi. It is a new resort for tourists at the foot of Vaðlaheiðar.
DESIGN OF AN EXTENSION AT A REHABILITATION DEPARTMENT
In August, an agreement was signed between EFLU, Nýs Landspítala ohf. and the Nordic Office of Architecture to finalise a 3,800 square meter extension to Grensás's rehabilitation department. The design process is expected to take approximately one year, after which it will be possible to start construction.
COLLABORATION WITH CARBFIX ON THE PRE-DESIGN OF THE CODA TERMINAL
In April, EFLA negotiated with Carbfix for the preliminary design of the Coda Terminal, the planned reception and disposal station for carbon dioxide (CO2) in Straumsvík. The preliminary design includes, among other things, needs analysis and initial design of equipment and buildings, analysis of alternatives and evaluation of planning issues, costs and schedules.
