Silicon metal plant - PCC Bakki
In 2015 PCC started construction for a silicon metal plant in Bakki located in the municipality of Norðurþing in the northern part of Iceland. The operation commenced in 2018. SMS Group and M+W Germany are responsible for the construction.
EFLA designed the buildings in Bakki, supplied a design and building manager and is part of the site management team.

The project's objective
The plant will produce around 32.000 tonnes of silicon metal each year in two furnaces using 52 MW of energy coming from the nearby geothermal power plant in Þeistareykir, operated by Landsvirkjun. The plant is built around a furnace building which is the heart of the plant. In total, over 20 buildings support the production.
EFLA has designed all structures, apart from the steel structure of the furnace building and the structure of the production equipment, and regarding those, EFLA consulted with the international designers regarding Icelandic requirements and earthquake design.
EFLA designed all MEP systems along with acoustic and fire safety engineering. EFLA also designed the plot's roads along with other infrastructure-related installations such as underground utilities.
EFLA is a building manager and design manager according to the Icelandic Building Regulation on all structures on the plot. The building manager is responsible for registering master craftsmen and the execution is according to the design, the execution complies with regulations and technical specifications. EFLA also handles all audits for the municipality and quality control for PCC.
Environmental issues
EFLA was responsible for installing two environmental monitoring stations near the silicon plant that monitor continuously the amount of pollutants and major heavy metals in the area.
EFLA manages the operation of the environmental stations, retrieves all data and analyzes them.
