Ellingsen headquarters

Ellingsen is an Icelandic retail company that specializes in traveling, outdoor activities and hunting products. The company was founded in 1916 in Reykjavík and has been a cornerstone in Icelandic retail history ever since. In 2006, Ellingsen built new headquarters at Fiskislóð 1 in Reykjavík.

EFLA designed various systems for the building, including the sanitary-, heating-, drainage-, cooling-, ventilation-, snow melting-, and pressurized air systems.

The project's objective

The new facilities of approximately 2.000 m2 are divided into four sections, a shopping facility on the main floor, a warehouse and repair services in the back of the building and offices on the second floor.

The building has a sophisticated ventilation system, floor heating and floor cooling system since because of the high internal heat load caused by the low-angle sun path in Iceland and the rather large glass façade of the building, substantial cooling is needed. In addition to the ventilation cooling, the floor heating system can be reversed and cold water added to the system for additional cooling. This is especially effective since a floor heating system reacts slowly to temperature changes. By switching to floor cooling, the response time of the cooling system is shortened significantly and its capacity increased.

In front of and around the building is a parking lot with approximately 80 parking spaces. All parking spaces and service areas are equipped with snow melting systems.

Construction began in 2006 and was completed in 2007.
