New major vessel port in Nuuk creates numerous opportunities

The first major vessel port in Greenland was opened for business in Nuuk this summer. The port is a milestone in the economy of Greenland, which has been at a disadvantage due to lack of space and, as a result, has had limited business opportunities. The new port opens the means of ways to strengthen the economic and employment options of Greenlanders.

The new port opens up new possibilities as regards the handling, delivery and import and export of goods to and from the country. In addition, Greenlanders can now deliver goods directly to consumers instead of shipping them through Aalborg in Denmark, as has been the case to date.

A co-operation agreement has been reached with Eimskip, and Greenlanders foresee that between 50 and 100 new jobs will be created in Nuuk as a result, in addition to the fact that operations in North Jutland will be transferred to Greenland.

The opening of the new port will also make it possible to receive larger cargo vessels and cruise ships as well enlarge the entire port area. New buildings in the port area are being built, and as a result, the facilities will improve considerably and strengthen the operations in the area.

EFLA consulting engineers were responsible for the design of the building in the habour area, i.e. project mangement, construtions, electrial design, acoustics, fire protection design and HVAC.

The involvement of Icelanders has been diverse in nature and has included engineering consultation, construction work, earthworks, drilling and monitoring. Other partners include Per Aarsleff, Ístak and Rambøll DK, together with sub-contractors.
