EFLA consulting engineers have been selected as partners in two projects related to the use of geothermal energy in Bjelovar, Croatia. The projects are partly funded by EEA and Norway Grants, EEA Grants. The goal of the projects is to increase energy production from renewable sources, reduce CO2 emissions and increase the security of energy supply.

About

  • Development of Technical Documentation for the Use of Geothermal Energy in the Area of Veliko Korenovo - Veliko Korenovo GT-1, reference number 70
  • Increased geothermal energy production capacity - infrastructural activities at the drill hole Korenovo GT-1, reference number 102

These goals will be achieved through the preparation of technical documentation for the use of geothermal energy, which is a prerequisite for the construction of wells and geothermal energy production, with the planned conjoined usage of geothermal energy (district heating and commercial use). As well as by implementing infrastructure works (construction and mining of geothermal sources/wells) on the well Korenovo GT-1 to exploit geothermal energy, with the ultimate planned combined use of produced energy (district heating and commercial use).

Geothermal energy obtained from the Korenovo GT - 1 well will be used for heating purposes to supply the planned sport and recreation complex in Veliko Korenovo with thermal energy, future Korenovo Business Zone, and planned greenhouse agricultural production in the Veliko Korenovo area.

The project's target groups are the City of Bjelovar in the Applicant's role, Terme Bjelovar d.o.o - a company as Partner 1, and EFLA hf. as Partner 2. The end users are the users of the sport and recreation complex services, entrepreneurs in the Korenovo Business Zone, farmers who will use geothermal energy for production, and all residents of the local area where the project is being implemented, due to air quality increase, CO2 emissions reduction, and economic development.

The Development of Technical Documentation for the Use of Geothermal Energy in the Area of Veliko Korenovo - Veliko Korenovo GT-1 includes three activities:

  • Development of the technical documentation for geothermal energy projects.
  • Project management and administration activities.
  • Promotion and visibility activities.

Increased geothermal energy production capacity - infrastructural activities at the drill hole Korenovo GT-1 will also include three activities:

  • Pilot project - construction or revitalization of production and injection wells in areas with a valid permit for exploration and/or extraction of geothermal waters.
  • Project management and administration activities.
  • Promotion and visibility activities.

Study visit to Bjelovar in October

Through defined project activities, the outcomes and immediate results defined by the projects will be achieved. The essential documentation for constructing a geothermal well will be prepared and utilized to increase geothermal energy production while reducing CO2 emissions annually. The project's main objective is to produce energy to decrease carbon emissions and increase supply security. Therefore, the development of technical documentation is required to reach the well construction stage and geothermal energy exploitation in the defined area.

The projects will contribute to increasing renewable energy. Research indicates that 25,920 MWh will be produced annually. Furthermore, the estimated reduction of annual CO2 emissions is 3,500 tons per year. Preparing the essential technical documentation is a prerequisite for the project's development.

EFLA consulting engineers will improve the implementation capacity of applicants and partners through study visits to advise and provide examples of good practices. EFLA will go on a study visit to Bjelovar in the beginning of October 2022. EFLA will participate in roundtable discussions, discuss the project's technical details, visit the borehole, and participate in a conference about the project.

Through bilateral cooperation, the objectives of the projects will be achieved. The indirect effects of the project and the cooperation between the City of Bjelovar, Terme Bjelovar d.o.o and EFLA are the possibilities of further works and the construction of the well itself, exploration of the geothermal potential, and the production of geothermal energy with combined usage that will be accustomed used for several already identified purposes.

The project "Development of technical documentation for the use of geothermal energy in the area of Veliko Korenovo - Korenovo GT-1, reference number 70" is worth €309,320.04, of which €258,251.29 in grants are financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA financial mechanism for the period 2014-2021 within the "Energy and Climate Change" Program. The goal of the project is to increase energy production from renewable sources, reduce CO2 emissions and increase security of supply.

The project "Increased geothermal energy production capacity – infrastructural activities at the drillhole Korenovo GT-1, reference number 102" is worth €3,468,743.62, of which €1,300,000.00 in grants is financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through of the EEA financial mechanism for the period 2014-2021 within the "Energy and Climate Change" Program. The goal of the project is to increase energy production from renewable sources, reduce CO2 emissions and increase security of supply.
