A road tunnel
in the
making

The main road between the towns of Ísafjörður and Bolungarvík in the northeast of Iceland has been noted for dangerous rock slides and snow avalanches. A solution to that is a new road tunnel, 5.1 km-long. The tunnel has been under construction for more than 18 months, the contractor using conventional methods of blasting and excavating.
Shortly after noon on Monday Nov. 15th, the last explosion perforated a rock wall in the middle section of the tunnel but the actual celebration of the event took place on Nov. 28th.
EFLA has done the construction supervision and will continue to do so until the finishing touch is over.
