EFLA: Paving the way
for new types
of buildings

In late June, a new information centre for the Vatnajökull National Park was inaugurated at Skriðuklaustur in Northeastern Iceland, not far from the town of Egilsstaðir, and opened by the Minister of Environment mrs. Svandís Svavarsdóttir.

The building is the first in Iceland with a BREEAM-certification and the first totally environmentally sound modern building in the country.

EFLA and the architects at Arkis, Reykjavík won the design competition instigated by the Icelandic state in 2009. EFLA has handled i.a. the structural design, HVAC and plumbing, acoustics and saftey aspects as well as the environmental consultation re. the BREEAM standard.

A comprehensive exhibition on the eastern part of the national park is housed in the building (the Wheel of the World).
