Motorway junction in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland

Reykjanesbraut web

Construction work on a motorway junction between Reykjanesbraut and Krýsuvíkurvegur is in full swing at present. The construction of the motorway junction is a part of the doubling of the lanes of Reykjanesbraut on the section of the road between Kaldárselsvegur and Krýsuvíkurvegur.

EFLA was involved in the project in a number of ways and was responsible for, among other things, the overall design of the four-lane road.

At present, work is being carried out on the motorway junction at Krýsuvíkurvegur. At the same time, work is being carried out on linking the junction to Suðurbraut, the construction of pedestrian and cycling pathways, speed reduction measures on Suðurbraut and significant changes to the systems of utilities companies in the project area.

In 2013, an underpass for pedestrian traffic was constructed at Suðurholt, passing under Reykjanesbraut, as a part of the future changes to the area.

New junction bridge

A new junction bridge is being built at the motorway junction. The bridge is a concrete, 30 m single-span bridge with rock foundations. The bridge forms an underpass for Krýsuvíkurvegur under Reykjanesbraut. Support walls at the ends of the underpass are angled 30° from the vertical and thus form a kind of vault. The bridge is long enough to allow for a four-lane Krýsuvíkurvegur. EFLA was responsible for the design of the bridge in collaboration with Studio Granda Architects.

The construction of the motorway junction is a part of the doubling of the lanes of Reykjanesbraut on the section of the road between Kaldárselsvegur to Krýsuvíkurvegur. The project is expected to significantly improve the flow of traffic and traffic safety in the area.

The Icelandic Road Administration issued an invitation to tender in the spring of 2017, and its contractors are Loftorka and Suðurverk. Contractor costs are approximately ISK 900 million, and the work is expected to be completed in November. It should be noted that this section of Reykjanesbraut will not be doubled to two lanes in each direction at this stage.
